MEANING OF ENVIRONMENT

Mental health is often defined with two attributes:

  • capability to love

  • capability to work
  • To love means that we have enough good relationships and we can feel empathy. To work means that we have enough life-handling skills to manage well in our every day life.

Loneliness, separation and isolation are everyday life for many people who have mental health problems. Isolation can be at the same time a cause and a consequence to mental health problems. It can be like vicious circle.

To be well we need to have enough contacts to the outside world and to other people. If we are isolating too much our safe living environment is getting smaller and smaller. And our fears and threats are growing bigger and bigger and come closer and closer.

Only way to win fear or threat is to face them.

We need to have enough space and safety around us to live decent life.
Picture A (above) describes situation when safe living area is too small. Threats and fears are too close so that we could live relaxed and be happy.
Picture B (above) describes situation when safe living area is big enough, when fears and threats are far enough from our life's center point.

Our safe area is growing to the "grey" and "dark" area. Growing means that we must be able to walk on thin ice, face our fears and beat them.
We can use movies to help us learn to live with those frightening or dreadful emotions. Or at least to have some kind of contact with them, get to know them.
When we can do it with movies it's much more easier to face those emotions in every day life.
